Goodbye, Yemen…Hello, new-and-improved Traditional Mocha Java!
As of February 6th, we are removing Yemen Mocha Sanani from our offerings but will continue to offer a new and improved, Yemen-free, Traditional Mocha Java. The bulk of the dry-processed coffees from Yemen and Ethiopia have declined in quality over the last few years and the best coffees from Yemen, in particular, are in short supply. Even though we enjoy coffee from Yemen when it is good, we do not want to continue to carry the coffee year-round. When we are able to source killer Yemens in the future we will put them on special so that the fans of this unique coffee can get their fix.
We have been working to retool Traditional Mocha Java so that it exhibits the same, unique flavor profile without the use of Yemen. This was actually not a very difficult task. In fact, all you really sacrifice when you replace Yemen with Harar is the historical accuracy of the mixture (and you really don’t exactly lose that either, since many dry-processed Ethiopias are referred to as Mochas). The result of our experimentation is a blend of Java, Sumatra and Ethiopia Harar that is (no surprise) better that the original. Fans of this blend should be pleased with the change, if they notice it at all.
*another historical note: During the 1700’s when the original Mocha Java blends were created, most of the coffee exports from Indonesia were called Java, regardless if they came from Java, Sumatra, Celebes, etc.
