Xalaat Africa
Saturday, July 25th
3:00pm-4:30pm
Yaya Kambaye, founder and musical director of the group, Xalaat Africa (which means thinking about Africa), comes from Senegal, West Africa. His exposure from birth into the griot world of storytelling and praise singing through the use of music allowed him to develop skills to play a large variety of West African instruments; mastering the djembe (drum) and kora (21 string African harp). He learned ancient, traditional rhythms and songs, history and genealogy from older family members, passed on through the rich oral tradition of bringing the past to present generations through music. Yaya began formal training at the age of 7 as a percussionist and kora player and was performing with family members by the age of 10.
Yaya and ensemble of Xalaat Africa have performed and give workshops for such well known organizations as Ko-Thi Dance Co., Marquette University, the Milwaukee Ballet, Danceworks, MATC, Milwaukee Public Theater, the YMCA, The Greater Milwaukee Boys and Girls Clubs and Milwaukee Public Schools.
