Our Milwaukee - Switch To 10% And Light Up The Economy!

posted on: July 27, 2009

imageAlterra Coffee is proud to be a founding member of Our Milwaukee, a business alliance that advocates for locally owned businesses that provide a genuine, quality experience – in celebration of our community’s unique character.  Our Milwaukee’s August 2009 Join Us in Making the Switch campaign is intended to raise consumer awareness in our community about the positive economic impact that patronizing local businesses offers.  Switch 10% of your current spending to local businesses and light up our economy!

In a 2007 study conducted by Civic Economics for Kent County, Michigan (home to Grand Rapids), switching 10% of income to locally owned pharmacies, grocery stores, restaurants and banks would:
• Generate early $140M in new economic activity
• Create over 1600 new jobs
• Provide over $50M in new wages

Imagine the potential when including all locally owned, independent businesses?

It’s a good reminder during these tough economic times, local businesses
• are less likely to leave when experiencing change and growth
• are more invested in the community’s future
• are the largest employer nationally
• give back an average 250% more to local non-profits
• keep our community unique

Well, living in Green Co near New Glarus may not qualify me as local, but I’ve been buying Alterra coffee exclusively now for years.  I was just out to Milwaukee again Sunday July 26 for my usual stock up order of 15 lbs. whole bean East Timor Maubisse.  Alterra is the best!  And congrats on the new roastery on Humboldt!
